The skived PowerJacket was added in 1984, making this bullet an excellent choice for 45 Colt vintage or modern handguns. Vintage models usually had a .454 inch diameter bore. However, modern Colt, Ruger, Smith & Wesson, Taurus, and most other handguns, including replicas of the Colt Single Action Army, will have barrels with a .451 inch bore. This bullet can be used in vintage 45 Colt handguns, but sizing cases may require special attention in older reloading dies. The 240 grain #8820 bullet has a cannelure for roll crimping, and it may be loaded into 45 Colt cartridges to be used in rifles with tubular magazines. This bullet is very effective for hunting because of the reliable expansion of the hollow cavity PowerJacket design and trademark Sierra accuracy. The International Practical Shooting Confederation needs only 917 fps muzzle velocity with the 180 grain #8469 to make "major." These power factors are easily attained with the heavier bullets in the 10 mm Auto or 40 S&W. One also can use any of these bullets in an "old timer," the 38-40 Winchester (38 WCF), made popular in both single-action revolvers and rifles for Cowboy Shooting. However, these bullets are not legal for competition. This bullet has a heavy, double-tapered jacket drawn to very tight tolerances and a special alloy core for deep penetration and good expansion on heavy game. It also has the classic Sierra SBT shape for exceptional ballistic efficiency among 35 caliber bullets. This bullet delivers incredible accuracy and retains velocity and energy exceptionally well downrange. The flat trajectory extends the useful range of all appropriate 35 caliber cartridges and delivers smashing power even at long range. Although not suited for the 35 Remington cartridge, it is well matched to the more potent 358 Winchester and 350 Remington Magnum cartridges, as well as the 35 Whelen. Ranges should be kept less than 150 yards when using the 35 Remington cartridge to ensure expansion in medium game.
