    Sierra has enhanced a segment of the MatchKing line by adding the acetal resin tip, thus crowning the Tipped MatchKing (TMK) bullet line. The major advantage of adding a tip to the bullet is the reduction of drag, producing a more favorable ballistic coefficient. Another benefit is reliable feeding in magazine fed firearms. The introduction of the 60 Gr. TMK helped to fill a gap in the 22 caliber Match bullet offering. While they are recognized around the world for record-setting accuracy, MatchKing® and Tipped MatchKing® bullets are not recommended for most hunting applications. Although MatchKing® and Tipped MatchKing® bullets are commonly used for varmint hunting, their design will not provide the same reliable explosive expansion at equivalent velocities in varmints compared to their lightly jacketed Hornet, Blitz or Varminter counterparts. This bullet requires a barrel twist rate of 1×10” or faster. The #7160 was introduced in 2018.

    In rifles, the semi-point design allows this style of bullet to expand faster than a spitzer style due to a generous amount of exposed lead at the tip and the slightly larger opening in the jacket. Capable of outstanding accuracy, this bullet can be an excellent choice for varmints and small game in many early 22 centerfire rifles, which have slower twist rates than those commonly used today. The Semi-Point shape reduces bullet length for a given weight, making the bullet easier to stabilize. The penalty is that a Semi-Pointed bullet has a lower ballistic coefficient than a Spitzer-pointed bullet of the same weight. This bullet can also be used in modern rifles with faster twist rates. In handguns, because of the velocity constraints caused by short barrels, the primary usefulness of a semi-point bullet design is in cases where the twist rate may not be adequate to produce the best accuracy with a spitzer bullet. The relative shortness of the semi-point design can improve bullet stabilization and accuracy. This bullet will not give explosive expansion at longer ranges, but due to the wide jacket opening and generous exposed lead tip can be useful at shorter ranges for fur bearers whose pelts are to be preserved.

With the introduction of the 80 grain #9390, the M16 family of rifles really became a force to be reckoned with in National Match competition. Because of its extreme length, the 80 grain MatchKing® requires a twist rate not slower than 1x8 inches. However, it must be seated to an OAL that requires single loading in the M16/AR-15 series. While they are recognized around the world for record-setting accuracy, MatchKing® and Tipped MatchKing® bullets are not recommended for most hunting applications.     The 22 caliber 90 grain Hollow Point Boat Tail was created in response to the increasing demands of Long Range shooters. With the success of the AR-15/M16 rifles in Long Range competition, the need was felt to maximize the ballistic potential of these rifles. The 90 grain MatchKing® is the final product of a series of tests, covering both accuracy and exterior ballistics, to arrive at the best possible bullet for the Long Range competitor. Designed specifically for the .223 Remington / 5.56x45mm cartridge, the 90 MatchKing® is at equally at home in both Match and Service Rifles. Due to the inherent requirements for a bullet of this type, the 90 grain MatchKing® is intended for single loading, and is not intended to be fed from a magazine. While they are recognized around the world for record-setting accuracy, MatchKing® and Tipped MatchKing® bullets are not recommended for most hunting applications. Although MatchKing® and Tipped MatchKing® bullets are commonly used for varmint hunting, their design will not provide the same reliable explosive expansion at equivalent velocities in varmints compared to their lightly jacketed Hornet, Blitz or Varminter counterparts. Sierra recommends a 6.5” twist barrel for the #9290 22 cal 90 gr HPBT bullet when pushed at muzzle velocities lower than 2650 fps. In cartridges like the Valkyrie with muzzle velocities above 2650 fps, a 1x7” twist barrel will stabilize the bullet correctly.
