This bullet is the best long-range hunting bullet in 6.5 mm caliber. Exceptional accuracy, excellent ballistic shape, and adequate weight for medium and heavy game make this a truly exceptional bullet. This bullet is at its best in country like the wide open western prairie where shots are long and conditions difficult. It has a flat trajectory, great ability to resist crosswinds and vertical winds, and high energy delivery downrange. The bullet performs very well from any 6.5 mm cartridge with medium to large powder capacity, but it is at its absolute best from magnum rifles with maximum hunting loads.

Designed for hunting, specifically for large bears, and for Handgun Metallic Silhouette competition with magnum calibers, this 300 grain #8830 Jacketed Soft Point bullet was introduced in 2004. Its construction ensures deep penetration on the largest game due to a heavy jacket and extremely hard 6% / 4% core. This is the heaviest bullet Sierra produces in the 45cal pistol lineup and should be used in a 45 Colt if penetration is a must, and it can work in the 454 Casull or similar cartridges easily. It has an established reputation in the game fields of North America and is considered to be the bullet for hunting dangerous game with a handgun. It is not, however, recommended for deer-size game because of its hardness. Because this bullet has a cannelure and can be roll-crimped, it may be loaded in cartridges and used in modern rifles with tubular magazines.
When seated to the cannelure, this bullet can have an overall length that may not feed well in some lever action rifles with a shorter carrier. Recommended OAL of 1.650” in the 45 Colt and 1.755” in the 454 Casull.

For rifles in 30 caliber, this 165 grain #2140 Hollow Point Boat Tail bullet, which is patterned after the world-famous 168 grain MatchKing bullet, was designed for shooters who desire a hunting version of that famous MatchKing. It is slightly "harder" than its 165 grain Spitzer Boat Tail counterpart and will give superior penetration and good expansion on medium game with excellent accuracy. This is a good medium-weight bullet choice for shooters of 30 caliber magnum rifles who desire a bullet that will not deform at the point.
For handguns chambering 30 caliber cartridges, this 165 grain #2140 bullet is "hard" and will expand in medium to large game only when driven at a muzzle velocity of 2500 fps or more, which is achievable in the 308 Winchester cartridge in the Remington XP-100 handgun or a similar combination. It can, of course, be used for handgun silhouettes or other target purposes.

In rifles chambering 22 caliber cartridges of moderate to large powder capacity, this famous bullet is perhaps the most efficient 22 caliber bullet available for varmints at long range or targets. The spitzer boat tail design provides exceptional accuracy and a flat trajectory. The high ballistic coefficient of this bullet provides less sensitivity to crosswinds and vertical winds and greater retained velocity and energy downrange. It is an excellent choice for most 22 centerfire cartridges but is at its best in the 22-250, 220 Swift, and similar high-velocity cartridges. For target shooting purposes this 55 grain spitzer boat tail has been surpassed by the heavier MatchKing bullets in 22 caliber, but in many rifles it delivers match-grade accuracy.
For handguns, because it has the Sierra high velocity construction, this bullet is too "hard" to be recommended for hunting applications. However, it features the famous Sierra accuracy and is certainly an excellent choice for long-range accuracy under all conditions. If a boat tail bullet with extremely high accuracy fits your needs for target shooting, then this bullet should be your choice.
