Broken Record

By Philip Mahin

I know you may have heard this one before, but where are all the bullets? For that matter, cases, powder and especially primers? I can’t speak for everyone, but I can say we at Sierra are working overtime to fill orders from record demands. We have gained machines, help to run them, and are breaking production records on a regular basis. Some of these new machines have been busy making hunting bullets of various diameter and weights, so you’ve most likely found a few over the last several months listed as available on our website here – Shop In Stock. This page changes regularly, so check back often. If we have them, you can most likely find them at your favorite major mail order distributor also – if they haven’t run out of them before you read this of course.

I have heard reports of customers finding small pistol and rifle primers, in standards and mags, but only a few have found the large size and they were most likely from individuals willing to part with them. Don’t get discouraged. There is hope that they will also be plentiful again someday. Powders are slowly but surely showing back up at my local stores, even in the 8 lb jugs, and of popular selections. Of course, I’ve been getting a lot of calls about forming cases from something else, so there are more options than face value in that regard. I feel like the worst part of this situation are the reports coming in of con artists that are taking money but not delivering on sold goods. Keep your wits about you and don’t fall for the ‘too good to be true’ sham.

I know it has been a rough go lately. I actually had a caller assume that I can get any component I want at any time, just because I work here. I assure you that I am subject to availability, just like everyone else. I’ve been waiting for what feels like forever to find some of the components that I need to keep going with some of the odd duck cartridges I like. That very reason is why I always keep some of the more common cartridges on hand, just to keep the family fed or to scratch the trigger finger itch. There is plenty of 9mm and 223 Rem ammo here and other sources.

The best advice I can give is be patient. It will be a while before it all pans out and we get back to what we could consider normal. Just remember, there is no telling what your neighbors are going through right now. They may need help but don’t know how to ask. A little kindness goes a long way. Be safe, and we’ll talk again next time.
